National Coffee Sippers Applaud Nearby Cafes

Two Wicker Park coffee shops recently made national headlines for being among the best in the nation when it comes to crafting that good ol' cup of Joe. Intelligentsia, which currently has five Chicago locations, was also named.

Two Wicker Park coffee shops made the national cut for the best in the country, according to a survey that considered food, atmosphere, customer service and the "unique factor."

The Wormhole Coffee, 1462 N. Milwaukee Ave., and Ipsento, 2035 N. Western Ave. were among 33 shops and chains named as the best in the U.S. by The Daily Meal. Intelligentsia, which has five locations throughout Chicago and a sixth coming to nearby Old Town soon, was also on the list.

"We … asked our coffee experts—coffee bloggers, roasters, shop owners, baristas, and educators—to nominate the shops they loved," its website says. "Our panel then voted on a list of nearly 150 coffee shops from coast to coast. In the end, we narrowed down our list to the most highly ranked (and most talked about) 33 shops and chains …"

The results named Ipsento as one of Chicago's best-known small-batch roasters. It's among the only shops in the city that roasts its beans on site, which, according to The Daily Meal, means "you're getting some out-of-this-world coffee."

The Wormhole made the list for its hip-hop, old movie atmosphere which includes a Back to the Future Delorean car sitting in the back.

"The Wormhole rated exceptionally high from our panelists for its exceptional coffee quality," the report says.

"Using local roaster HalfWit Coffee Roasters as their primary bean with guest starring roasters (like everyone’s favorite, Handsome Coffee Roasters), The Wormhole delivers. As manager Stevie Baka recently put it on Chicago Public Radio, a good cup of coffee is well worth the wait for a tulip-decorated, quality espresso drink."
